Welcome to Second Semester!

Posted by Thando Mkhabela

I’ve spent a few years in university and I can truly say that things change during your second semester. Whether it be a new attitude about school, new classes, a chance to make new friends, or whatever it may be, second semester seems like a fresh start!

I think it seems like this, because it’s a new year. If your first semester wasn’t that great, guess what? It’s second semester and you have a chance to make some changes. The new term is terrific because it creates new opportunities to do well and to succeed. Maybe you realized that you might need some extra help balancing school, work and friends. Our campus, and many other campuses can provide you with all the resources that you need to be successful. I’ll just be giving a few tips on what I think is essential to having a better second term.

  1. Get a new attitude. Maybe things didn’t go well last semester, or you struggled school wise. 2nd semester is your chance to start fresh with a new year and a new positive attitude.

  1. Get organized. If you want to succeed, get organized (it sounds like cliché advice, but it works). Make sure that you have a planner to organize your classes, assignments, extracurricular activities and everything else.

  1. Get involved. Find new opportunities that can enhance your university experience. Get involved in a leadership role, join a club, or start an initiative.

  1. Find balance. As university students, we sometimes get overwhelmed by classes, extracurricular activities, and spending time with family and friends. Remember to find a balance by taking time to do the things that you love, taking a day off once in a while, and resting. Finding a balance is key in helping you succeed in university.

  1. Think ahead. Start thinking of summer plans. Yes, there is still snow on the ground, but it’s never too early to look for summer job opportunities, spring courses, or plan a nice vacation. Start thinking of what you want to do in the summer.

These are just a few of my tips. Feel free to leave some of your advice in the comments for succeeding in second semester, I’d love to hear from you!
