Hi there! My name is Emily Hyrcha, and I’m a Senior Student Ambassador at Ambrose University! I’m going to share a little bit about me, and my journey with Ambrose (the best school everrrr).
Who am I?
So a bit about me… I’m allergic to peanuts (“so fun!” … said no allergic person out there ever), I love the smell of the laundry detergent aisle in grocery stores, and my favourite food is spinach dip. I’m in my fourth year at Ambrose, finishing a Bachelor of Arts in General Studies degree, before starting my Bachelor of Education degree at Ambrose next fall. And let me just tell you this: I. Love. Ambrose. This is by far the best choice that I could have made in terms of post-secondary school. I didn’t always know that though! Fun fact: I was also accepted to both the U of C and Mount Royal.
My Ambrose Journey
Ok, ya know what, I need to rewind a bit… I only ever planned to come to Ambrose for a year. I wanted that Bible school experience, something I knew I wanted after coming back from Capernwray Australia, and then I wanted to move on to my degree, Education, and get er’ done. I never wanted a long university experience, but to simply do my time at school and then start working in my career. I did know that taking Bible classes at a Christian institution was something that was important to me, which helped me to choose Ambrose for my first year of university.
My first year here though, God had different plans. He always intended for me to finish my entire degree here, and started planting those seeds in me in year one. There was no way He was going to let me float through classes, go home, and not be a part of the Ambrose community. He basically told me that I was going to get involved in a way that I literally never would have guessed. One thing led to another, and I joined the Ambrose Lions Basketball Team, and played in the ACAL league in Alberta.
“Umm, ok God, not really why I came to Ambrose, but I’ll trust ya.” I ended up making the best friends of all time, having so much fun, and being encouraged in ways I didn’t know possible.
So after my first year, my plan was to switch schools for fall 2014, BUT THEN God said, “Nope, Emily, you’re going to stay at Ambrose for another year and stay involved.” So I negotiated, “Umm, ok, God, but then on to my plans.” So I came back to Ambrose in the fall, and decided that basketball was not the right choice. Instead, I joined the team that plans and executes Legacy Youth Conference. Being involved in student leadership in this community was life changing. I got to work closely with amazing professors, learn problem solving and communication techniques, and be encouraged in my daily walk with Christ. My professor even offered me a summer job at Camp Harmattan where I met some truly special people.
After this second year I said to God, “Ok, NOW I’m switching schools and starting my Education degree.” But, as you might be able to guess, the Lord had different plans for me. “Nope, Emily I want you to stay at Ambrose.” And low and behold, He opened up the door for me to be the Student Director of Legacy Youth Conference. So I stayed at Ambrose another year, and again, it was clear that this school is where I should be. I love the community here, the small class sizes, the one on one interactions with professors, all of the fun ways to get involved around campus, and so much more. Turns out God knew what He was doing all along when He brought me to Ambrose. Isn’t He cool like that!? I can look back at my entire degree, and see His hand in everything. I can see Him in the words that professors speak, in the architecture of the school building, in my assignments, in Chapel services, and through my roommates who I met in class last year. So now, here I am, happy as a clam (what a weird saying!), still at Ambrose. No, I’m not still at Ambrose, but simply at Ambrose, because I wouldn’t have it any other way.
