Are you a freshmen entering university in the fall of 2017? Are you excited but yet kind of nervous on how everything is going to turn out? Maybe this will be your first time away from home? Maybe this is the first time that you won’t be at school for a whole 8 hours? Whatever the case, here are 5 things that I wish I knew coming into my freshmen year of University:
Making friends is not as hard as you may think!
When I first started my University journey, making friends was a big scare for me. In high school I had always had a large circle of friends and I was reluctant to give that up and start back at ground zero. Trust me it all worked out fine. All you have to do is be yourself and the rest will come!
Get involved!
Upon first coming to University you may be in the “get in, get out” mindset and that’s okay, but there are so many different ways to get involved! Get involved with things such as scorekeeping for sporting events, and student council! Join the commuter lounge or partake in residence activities to help you build community. Plus you will make some unforgettable friends!
Check into minors
On the more academic side of things, make sure that you check into minors. I know that sometimes all you are thinking of is completing that major, but a minor is a great way to compliment your degree. There are so many different options for you to look into, so make sure you don’t waste time before looking at them all!
Profs are the good guys
I know that sometimes when you are coming into University, we see our professors as people who are high and mighty, but they’re not. Your profs are here to help and they want to build a relationship with you. Although they have more schooling than you do, they are also doing research and learning alongside you. Do not be scared to talk to them, they don’t bite!
Be prepared for an experience you will never forget!
University can be some of the best years of your life… if you take advantage of it. You will meet amazing people, learn new things and end with a career ahead of you. If you take advantage of all that is offered, you are sure to have an unforgettable experience! So prepare yourself for the ride!
