Banqueting with Emma House

Posted by Thando Mkhabela

Hey! It’s your Vice President of Social Events and I’m here to let you know about an annual Ambrose Event. The Emma House Christmas Banquet has been held here at Ambrose for the last 5 years. Emma House is a local non-profit organization that aims to offer support and safety to homeless, pregnant women. It is in partnership with Emma House that Ambrose students set up this banquet and create a fun evening for these deserving mothers and their children.

This social event is unique in that it is student run and students are volunteering. Students volunteer in roles such as:

-Drivers(to get the ladies and guests from their place to Ambrose then back home at the end of the night)

-Hairstylists(we had a number of talented Ambrose women volunteer to style many of the ladies hair)

-Nail technicians(not only does Ambrose have talented hair stylists, but we also had a number of people volunteer to help paint nails)

-Servers(these students who volunteered helped to serve dinner as well as make sure that our Emma House guests were taken care of)

-Table Hosts(students volunteered to mediate conversation and hear all about the experiences of the Emma House women)

-Greeters(we had 2 great greeters that welcomed guests to the banquet)

-Babysitters(we had a number of students volunteer to take care of the children during the evening. This is often a position that many of our students are interested in as they have a chance to connect with toddlers and babies)

The evening started with a classic Turkey Christmas dinner and was followed by some sweet dessert. We then moved onto a little entertainment provided by two talented Ambrose musicians, they then lead everyone in the singing of a few classic Christmas carols. Tim, an Emma House executive gave an update of the organization. He mentioned the amazing programs that they currently have in place and what they hope to achieve in the future.

The open floor portion of the evening really reflected why Ambrose has decided to host this banquet. This part of the evening was a time in which the microphone was open and the women from Emma House had the chance to state a memory or their experience at Emma House. Many of the women spoke directly about Judy and Al and how much they’ve done to help them. These women spoke of their broken situations and how through Emma House, they were provided with the help they needed to better their lives, and the lives of their children. This was an emotional part of the evening as the message in why it is so important to help was so evident.

I was glad to have helped organize this amazing event and help the Emma House women and their families enjoy a special night out as well as recognize how much they’ve achieved.
