This was my first experience of LYC (Legacy Youth Conference) and it was AMAZING! But when someone asked me what my favorite part of the weekend was, I drew a blank! I hadn’t really participated much because I had been busy helping with the info booth, serving meals, helping with entertainment night… But I realized that all of that was my favorite part! I loved helping!
Perhaps it’s because of how I was raised, but I love to give my time and energy to help others. Volunteering has always been a hobby for me. At school, the church, or in the community, I could always be found serving in some way. It brings me joy to help others and meet the needs around me. I believe that serving others is one of my responsibilities as a follower of Christ. LYC gave me the opportunity to show Christ’s love to hundreds of high-school students and their leaders. I volunteered to help with as much as I could because I didn’t want to waste that opportunity!Galatians 5:13 says, “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another” (ESV). I love the imagery of Christ setting us free from our sins so that we can go and love others. Christ teaches us that to lead means to serve. We need to humble ourselves and reach out in love to our family, friends, and community. When we serve others, we not only reflect Christ, but we build relationships. You get to meet some great people and hear amazing stories.
Serving others is so rewarding! It brings me joy to know that I’ve helped changed someone’s life through even the smallest act of kindness. And sometimes I gain new skills that come in handy later on in life!
I encourage everyone to find ways to serve others. LYC is one of many ways to serve at Ambrose! Other opportunities include:
- Student Council
- Campus Activity Board
- Social Justice Events
- Game Day Staff
- Chapel Teams
- First Year Experience Leaders
- And of course, Ambassadors!
So may you go in peace to love and serve the Lord … and others! Happy serving!
