Attending a smaller-sized university has many perks. One of them is being able to easily get involved with clubs. One of the clubs at Ambrose is the Social Justice team. It is a great place to get involved in both the local community and the global community.
This year we are focusing on God's restorative justice for our fellow students, our beloved city, and the world beyond. We use Isaiah 1:7 as a guide for our planning which says: "Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow."
Last semester we discussed topics such as eating disorders, human trafficking, sexual abuse and the harms of pornography. While such topics seem very dark and serious, it is important that they are discussed, especially because many of us will encounter people who need support with these issues and some of us will end up working toward careers in social services. It is essential that as students, we are equipped with as much knowledge as possible before entering the workforce.
The social justice club isn’t just about having serious discussions though. We also organize fun activities such as a team bottle drive for the Samaritan's Purse's Water Project, a food drive on Halloween for the Salvation Army's food bank (some of us even dressed up and got candy!), and preparing meals at the Drop-In Centre. We also had the opportunity to go to the Samaritan's Purse's headquarters in Calgary and assist with the packing of their Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes.
Even though Social Justice is not a class at Ambrose, I have learnt a lot from the talks I have attended and the activities we have organized. I have made new and great friends and have enjoyed being a part of each event that was put on.
And the great news is that anyone can be a part of it!
