Sing Your Heart Out!

Posted by Emily Hyrcha

Do you like to sing? If your answer’s yes: awesome! Not really into it that much? Don’t worry, this blog is still for you!

Hands up if you’ve ever slacked on taking care of yourself, and all of your friends around you say something similar to, “What are you doing for self-care?” and all you can do it stare blankly back at them. I’ve been there… several times… I’ve written previously about the importance of taking care of yourself, but have you ever considered that singing could be a way to care for your soul? I’ve been in choirs for years and years, and it was only until this past semester that I realized that singing is a way to care for myself. To express what you feel through music and song is so healing! The best part, for me, is that I can get credits for taking care of myself. Yes, you read that right, I’m getting credit towards my University degree for my self-care practices.

Our Ambrose University Singers is a choir that can be taken as a class under a Fine Arts credit. Every Monday, I get to sing with my friends! I always feel rejuvenated when I leave, especially when the words of our songs speak right to me. We all have those songs that sound like the writer knew your exact story when they wrote the song! I love it when that happens!

If you don’t sing in a choir, or just really don’t feel like that’s the place to be for you, do not fret! The best place to sing is….drum roll… your car! Get an awesome car playlist pumping as you travel the streets, grooving and singing along! Stay safe though, and make sure that every song is good to go through shuffle before you start driving. No distracted driving here! Honestly, singing while I drive keeps me calm during those stressful rush hours and snowy days.

Fun fact: cars aren’t sound proof… If you’re belting it out at a stop light and pedestrians are nearby, just know they’re probably hearing everything. I learnt this the hard way… let’s just say I’ve received some really bizarre looks.

So take care of yourself, friends! Find what brings joy to your soul, and which songs are your jam! Rock on!
