Living in YYC: Cafe Edition

Posted by Anna Zipprick

When you first come to a city that you don’t know very well, it can be helpful to have a bit of a guide. So I’ve taken it upon myself to check with our local community to see what places are a must see for newcomers to Calgary. This is the café edition, so we’re looking specifically at coffee-shops and cafés. We all know and love the Calf here on campus and love that they offer Starbucks coffee. But sometimes it’s nice to get off campus and that’s where I come in. We’ve got a few that are local to Calgary alone, and a few chain establishments. Check them out below. If you have ideas of one’s to add to the list, please leave a comment and share your wisdom with the rest of us!

  1. Monogram: This is a really great shop to check out if you love specialty coffee, unique places to sit and do homework, or if you are looking for a place to connect with friends. An added bonus is that Monogram is co-owned by one of Ambrose's own alumni, Ben Put, who also happens to be a national barista champion!
  2. Lazy Loaf and Kettle: This is one of my favorite places to go for lunch, or just to grab a quick coffee on the go. They have great, customizable sandwiches, and yummy pastries too!
  3. Higher Ground: This is right in the middle of Kensington, and is so popular that you’ll rarely walk in with it not being busy. It has some great coffee and tea options, and great seating areas to sit and hang out with friends! “I love the atmosphere and the comfy seats, and they have some amazing specialty lattes!” – Kalie Eeles, Enrollment Coordinator
  4. Caffe Beano: “It is a cute little place in the Southwest that has an outstanding espresso chocolate milkshake. Their muffins are also very good!” – McKenzie Baker, Student Ambassador
  5. Nellie’s Break the Fast Café: This is a great one if you’re living on residence and don’t have a car, because this Café is right off of the train line! “It has THE BEST Mac n’ Cheese. It’s affordable too!” – Emily Hyrcha, Student Ambassador
  6. Waves: This is a classic, and because we have one so close, it’s almost on school property, this is a super popular hang-out for students who are working on papers, needing coffee/tea, or just wanting to have a chill atmosphere where they can meet their friends. The barista’s working there are incredibly friendly, and you get to know them pretty well over time. “I love how they use fresh chocolate for the hot cocoa. They have all the varieties of rooibos tea. Also, they are so nice and friendly when you walk in!” –Thando Mkhabela, Student Ambassador
  7. Buttermilk Fine Waffles: If you want waffles at any time during the day, this is a great place to hit up! “It has a great atmosphere, is locally owned, and is a great place for fresh waffles with seasonal toppings. Coffee has great flavour, and their orange juice is freshly squeezed on site with no additives!” – Alyssa Clark, Student Ambassador
  8. Insider Scoop: Denny’s as a study spot. If you’re like me, this wouldn’t have been one of the ‘cafés’ on this list. I wouldn’t have even thought of it. But, I’ve been told that it’s a great option. “You get free refills on hot drinks. They have plug-ins and free WIFI. They also only have booth seating, which is the BEST seating. Also, PANCAKES! And they’re open 24-7, and you never get kicked out. Great place to build community with friends who are also studying. And they’re always friendly, with good service.” – Miranda Perry, Student Ambassador.
