Taking Advantage of Christian Community

Posted by Miranda Casey

describe the imageLife as a university student does not give you much free time. From going to class, attending floor meetings, going to work, and catching up on the endless readings and assignments I have found my devotion life happens less and less often. I have always felt as if it was a chore. When I take a step back I feel ashamed for putting God last in my life. Going to a Christian school and attending all the ‘spiritual activities’ does not count devotional life.

The cool thing is there are many other students who feel the same as I do and we knew it was a problem in our lives. Since I have the opportunity to live with brothers and sisters in Christ every Sunday night we take time before our busy week starts, and we have a Bible study with just our floor. This allows each of us to have an accountability partner to go with and who we can pray for. We dive in the word and tackle real life troubles that we as university students struggle with. For an example last week our lesson was on worrying. We read the scripture together, and broke off into small groups. We then expressed what we struggle with in each one of our lives. Then within our small groups we were able to speak into each other lives. Then simply we prayed for those struggles.

Going to a Bible school can be hard, and I myself tend to put God in a box. I only bring him out when I need him at 2am writing a paper, or when I am enjoying his presences in chapel, or helping out with LYC. I am learning new ways every day to experience God and have him personally involved in every part of my life. By having someone to ask me “Miranda have you done your devotions today?”  My response should be yes, and if not it should be a reminder that today was busy and where has God through it. This gives me the realization I need to take God time no matter how many papers I have due. If I spend time with God, he will provide the peace and assurance I will have enough time and strength to do the rest. Take advantage of living with the Christian community here at Ambrose, it is in this time where you are able to build the foundation you will carry with you for the rest of your life… so do not miss out!
